Memorial Remembers Babies Lost

A memorial service hosted by Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen aims to remember babies who were lost through miscarriage and stillbirth. The annual event is Saturday at 11 AM at Aberdeen’s Riverside Cemetery.

Sister Pat Prunty is a chaplain at Avera Saint Luke’s in Aberdeen. She says the memorial service helps bring some closure for families who are mourning.

“And it’s really, really a loss,” Prunty says. “They will grieve it at the time, but they’ll also grieve it forever. And that’s important, because this was a life. And the life is with God. And so we want to be as respectful as we can.”

Prunty says the memorial marker donated by the Knights of Columbus each year gives parents a place to come and visit as they grieve. She says anyone who has experienced a loss through miscarriage or stillbirth is welcome to attend the service.

For more information, call Avera St. Luke’s Hospital. If there is inclement weather the service moves to the hospital chapel.
