Legion Lake Fire Grows, Winds Set To Increase Again

Officials with Custer State Park have announced the Legion Lake Fire has grown to 4,000 acres. The park remains closed to the public.

Forecasters with the National Weather Service say windy conditions are expected tonight.

Greg Richards is a NWS meteorologist in Rapid City. He says a cold front will enter the area tonight. He expects the wind in the Custer State Park area to shift to the southeast and to make conditions more difficult for firefighters. He says warnings and advisories are in effect.

"We've issued a high wind warning for Sturgis, Rapid City foothills and the plains east of the Black Hills. That starts late this evening and continues through tomorrow morning - and most of the rest of Western South Dakota is under a wind advisory through tonight and tomorrow with wind gusts around 50 miles per hour possible across a lot of the area, Richards says.”

Richards says the front will not bring a chance for rain as it moves through. He says another front is expected to provide a chance of light snow on Wednesday night, but little or no accumulation is expected.
