Guns To Work Bill

The House Commerce and Energy Committee deferred a gun rights bill to the 41st Day Monday. The bill allows for working employees to store guns in their car at their place of business while working. Executive Director of the South Dakota Retailers Shawn Lyons opposes the bill.  Lyons says individual businesses should be able to decide for themselves on a gun rights policy.

"We do believe that it’s essential that businesses be granted their private property rights and be able to set policies that they deem appropriate for their customers and employees alike,” says Lyons.

Lyons says even though he was an opponent on this bill, he is still supports the second amendment.  Proponents to the bill say a car is a person’s property and therefore storing a gun in one’s car during work is in the realm of a person’s right to bear arms. The bill was voted down eight to four.
