Former RC Police Chief Allender Announces Run For Mayor

Steve Allender announced Monday that he is officially running for mayor of Rapid City. The former chief of police joins a three-way race. Incumbent mayor Sam Kooiker (pronounced QUAKER) is vying to retain his position. And Councilwoman Amanda Scott sent out an email over the weekend saying she is running.
Allender retired 10 months ago from the police department. He says that experience drives his decision to run:
“It is 30 years of public service and knowing the rewards and the challenges behind that, and now that I’m free—I’m free and relaxed and I’ve remembered who I am—I’m ready to come back and serve this city, so... I mean, I wouldn’t do that if I looked at the mayor’s administration and thought everything was perfect.”
When asked how his administration would differ from the current one, Allender declined to go into specifics. He says he’ll make a number of public appearances and go into more detail over the course of the campaign.
Elections are held in June, and the mayor-elect takes office in early July.
