EPA Extends Public Comment Period On Uranium Mining

The Environmental Protection Agency is extending the public comment period for a uranium recovery operation in the Southern Black Hills, near Edgemont, by a month.

The comment period is for two underground injection control permits. One of the permits is for the process of in-situ uranium recovery, which uses enhanced ground water to extract uranium from a sandstone formation in the Inyan Kara aquifer. The other permit is for deep injection wells to store the waste water from the operation into the Minnelusa aquifer.

Officials with the EPA say public comment period extensions are common. Those interested have until June 19th to give input.
