Efforts To Improve Early Childhood Mental Health

SDSU

In The Moment ... October 26. 2018 Show 449 Hour 2

According to the National Center for Children in Poverty, an estimated 9.5 to 14.2 percent of children from birth to five years old nationwide experience social or emotional difficulties that impair their development. These challenges can be associated with traumatic events.

Staci Born, Assistant Professor at SDSU and licensed play therapist, and Christin Carotta, Assistant Professor of the SDSU Department of Counseling and Human Development, are the recipients of a five-year $2.2 million Substance Abuse Grant.

An estimated 270 children in South Dakota are expected to be served each year through this project.

Cara Hetland is the Director of Radio and Journalism Content for South Dakota Public Broadcasting.
