BPI Lawsuit

Chuck Baldwin, instructor in the University of South Dakota Contemporary Media and Journalism department, weighs in on the situation involving BPI and ABC News. The Dakota Dunes beef processing company BPI is suing ABC News over reports that aired this spring about the company's lean, finely-textured beef. Attorney Dan Webb filed the lawsuit in Union County Circuit Court last Thursday morning, on behalf of Beef Products, Incorporated. Webb says ABC referred to the beef product as "pink slime." Webb says BPI is seeking more than a billion dollars in damages as the company was forced to close three plants and lay off 700 workers when sales of the beef fell by 80 percent. ABC News Senior Vice President Jeffrey Schneider said in a statement that the lawsuit is without merit and ABC will contest it vigorously.
