A big Ponderosa pine tree can suck up lots of water. While the trees are drought tolerant, they are also very good at absorbing and transpiring water in wet years.
In the Black Hills thousands of acres of Ponderosa are now gone in the wake of the biggest infestation of bark beetles in recorded history.
And researchers with the United States Geological Survey now believe fewer pines maybe increasing the amount of water in some area streams.
